SERMON NOTES

The Lamb and the Lion
John 2:12-17

v12 After this He went down to Capernaum, He, His mother, His brothers, and His disciples; and they did not stay there many days. Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
v14 And He found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers doing business. When He had made a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changers’ money and overturned the tables.
v16 And He said to those who sold doves, “Take these things away! Do not make My Father’s house a house of merchandise!” Then His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for Your house has eaten Me up.”

John 20:30 but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.

The Family Goes To Capernaum v12

The Passover of the Jews v13

Exodus 9:1-3 Now the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying, “This month shall be your beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year to you. Speak to all the congregation of Israel, saying: ‘On the tenth of this month every man shall take for himself a lamb, according to the house of his father, a lamb for a household.

The Jewish historian Flavius Josephus in his book The Jewish War (Book VI, Chapter IX, Section 3), records the massive attendance numbers for Passover in Jerusalem. He describes a census taken by priests during the Passover in AD 65 where 256,500 lambs were sacrificed.

Exodus 12:5-7 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year. You may take it from the sheep or from the goats. Now you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month. Then the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it at twilight. And they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel of the houses where they eat it.

1 Corinthians 5:7 Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.

1 Peter 1:19 but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.

The Temple Scam v14

Mark 11:17...“Is it not written, My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations’? But you have made it a den of thieves.’”

He Burst Out in Holy Fury vv15-16

Miracle; An event that involves the direct and powerful action of God, transcending the ordinary laws of nature and defying common expectations of behavior.

2 Kings 5:14 So he went down and dipped seven times in the Jordan, according to the saying of the man of God; and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.

John 21:25 And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen.

Zeal For His Father’s House v17

Psalm 69:9 Because zeal for Your house has eaten me up, and the reproaches of those who reproach You have fallen on me.

You Are the Temple of God

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.
Our bodies are the shrine, or the sacred place, in which the Spirit not only lives, but is worshiped, revered, and honored. Psalm 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
